Variety of Life Nereididae
Predominantly intertidal, occasionally found subtidally. Adults may be found in a mucous tube, under boulders or on holdfasts of algae (Ref. 111185).Omnivorous, feeding on plant detritus, algae, and sometimes on harpacticoid copepods and amphipods (Ref. 108780).

Nereis pelagica
Nereis - The Clam Worm Or Sandworm. Nereis or Neanthes is a marine polychaete annelid that lives in burrows in sea bottom and comes out in night to prey upon small animals. N. virens (Sandworm), N. pelagica (Type-species) and N. succinea (Clam worm) are common species of Nereis.

Nereis pelagica can be distinguished from N. zonata by the four large conical paragnaths in Area VI on the pharynx, while N. zonata has six small conical paragnaths. In the anteriormost chaetigers the parapodial ligules are rounded in N. pelagica, while they are pointed in N. zonata. Nereis pelagia is similar to Hediste diversicolor in general.

ABSTRACT. The rates of oxygen uptake of the marine polychaete Nereis pelagica and the bivalve Arctica islandica depend on the availability of ambient oxygen. This is manifest both at the tissue level and in isolated mitochondria studied between oxygen tensions of 6.3 and 47.6 kPa (47-357 mmHg).

Mating: Females produce a pheromone attracting and signalling the males to shed sperm which in turn stimulates females to shed eggs, this behavior is known as swarming. Gametes are spawned through the metanephridia or body wall rupturing (termed as "epitoky", wherein a pelagic, reproductive individual, "epitoke", is formed from a benthic.

Published in Journal of the Marine… 1 May 1932. Biology. TLDR. Larvæ of Nereis pelagica Linnæus were reared from the egg, and the young worms, which developed from them, to the age of one year, and it is pointed out that these larvæ differed from those which Herpin reared in that they hatched earlier and instead of crawling as soon as.
