A 9:1 unun is a transformer that reduces the impedance at the input by a factor of 9. So, if you connect a length of wire that presents an impedance of about 450 Ω to the input, you'll get an impedance of about 50 Ω on the output. In fact, the 9:1 unun that I built is actually an autotransformer.

3 Answers. An end fed, 1/2 wavelength antenna will have a relatively high impedance of 5k ohms or more. So a 9:1, or greater, ratio of balun may reduce the impedance sufficiently to help your tuner get a match and help avoid a voltage flash-over in your tuner. However, there is another issue that may require some planning.

So, with this system, you have an excellent RF choke [the 1 to 1 current balun] which is then fed to the 9:1 transformer. On an analyser, the Ferromagnetics choke shows a nice flat response from 1.5 to 30 MHZ and only rising to 1 to 1.2 on 6m which seems to suggest a wide-banded core material. However, see my notes about operating above 30Mhz.

9:1 Magnetic Longwire Balun / Unun Completed 9:1 UnUn These are sometimes known as a Magnetic Longwire Balun. Its really an impedance transformer (9:1) to feed a high impedance, end fed (unbalanced) random wire which is likely to be a few hundred ohms, and transform it into something closer to a 50Ω (unbalanced) coaxial input, hence UnUn.

This project was a commission on behalf of Frank M1CPD who required a long wire UnUn. Perhaps better known as a Magnetic Longwire Balun, it is an impedance transformer whose purpose is to feed a high impedance long wire from a 50ohm unbalanced coaxial input. With a 9:1 turns ratio, this gives approx. 450ohm output impedance for the long wire.
